FLYER US / JAPAN TITLE, RELEASE YEAR & OVERVIEW
SIDE ARMS HYPER DYNE
Released 1985

One of Capcom's obscure yet popular early shooters, players of Side Arms Hyper Dyne assume the roles of Lieutenant Henry and Sergeant Sanders in a galactic battle between the human race of Earth and the alien forces of Bozon bent for Earth's destruction. These marines are equipped with jetpacks in specialized Mobilesuits α and β. To save Earth together, they must trek several action-filled stages and gun down the hordes of Bozon with improvised shotguns, machine guns, and missile launchers. The super deformed version of the Mobilesuits became a short-time Capcom mascot as well as a regular point item for various Capcom games later on.

FORGOTTEN WORLDS aka LOST WORLDS
Released 1988

Along with Ghouls 'N Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds is one of the first games for the CPS1 board that includes actual voice-overs during cutscenes. Players control flying marines armed with machine guns across an alien planet known as the Dust World and destroy the God Emperor known as Bios. As the soldiers destroy enemies, they must collect blue orbs known as Zenny in order to purchase stronger weapons, armor and other items from Sylphie, the shopkeeper. Most of the bosses of the various stages are named after mythologies of different cultures. The Player 1 marine was dubbed as the Unknown Soldier and appeared as a cameo helper in Marvel vs. Capcom 10 years later.

U.N. SQUADRON aka AREA 88
Released 1989

Much like the fighter jet games 1942 and 1943 comes another shooting game, loosely based on the manga of the same title. The U.N. Squadron features the pilots Shin Kazama, Mickey Simons and Greg Gates on their crusade to destroy the Project 4 faction from terrorizing the Middle Eastern country of Kutal. Players can purchase various weapons and power-ups between stages. Much like the character strengths in Final Fight, the F-14 is best for air combat, the A-10 is best for bombing the ground, while the F-20 is suitable both for air and ground warfare. This game later bore the spiritual sequel, Carrier Air Wing.

1941: COUNTER ATTACK
Released 1990

An aerial representation of the events during the second World War, 1941 pits players into a vertical plane shooting game where they must destroy enemy fighter jets while collecting upgrades for the plane's machine guns in order to increase firepower. The planes can maneuver by dive-looping around to evade enemy fire. The featured fighter jets in the game are a P-38 Lightning and a Mosquito Mk IV. This World War II type game bore a line of sequels.

MERCS aka SENJO NO OKAMI II
Released 1990

An overhead shooting game and the sequel of Commando, Mercs sends up to 3 players as mercenaries and run around 7 stages with blazing guns and fend off hordes of rebels who had kidnapped the former U.S. President. These soldiers must collect power-ups and new firearms to aid him best at the situation. Use the Megacrush Attack and see the devastation in an eyeblink. As you fight huge choppers, battleships and tanks as bosses, the players can even highjack enemy jeeps, turrets and even enormous tanks to use against the enemy army!

CARRIER AIRWING aka U.S. NAVY
Released 1990

The successor of U.N. Squadron revamps a new cast of pilots and plotline. The main adversary is the Middle Eastern country of Rabu which terrorizes Asia and Europe. The United States began to fight back when Rabu began to invade Japan. Much like its prequel, the game gives a selection between 3 planes: The F-14 Tomcat is the air-combat type, the A-6E Intruder is the ground-bomber type and the F/A-18 Hornet is the balanced type. Power-ups are scattered together with the hordes of planes and tanks within 10 stages of pure action. Players can also purchase missiles, bombs, shields and extra fuel between stages for better performance against the stage bosses.

THREE WONDERS: CHARIOT, ADVENTURE THROUGH THE SKY
Released 1991

Another third of the multigame title Three Wonders is named Chariot, which is the sequel of Midnight Wanderers albeit made into a sidescrolling fighter plane game. The princess of Ashtar was abducted by the demon Lar and she sends a sprite named Felm to find the Midnight Wanderers who had the Chariot in order to defeat Lar. Felm unknowingly bumps into our heroes and they set forth on the Chariot of Light across the skies filled with monsters familiar to the players of the prequel. The bosses are also named after Greek gods as well as constellations based on the zodiac. Players can also grab items for the Chariot's tail and cannon's firepower and collect hearts for extra lives.

VARTH: OPERATION THUNDERSTORM
Released 1992

Varth is a spiritual spin-off of the 1940s titles in terms of vertical-shooting gameplay. The game involves the disaster that destroys the human colony in the planet Varth. This colony is ran by the supercomputer called Delta 7 which controlled all of the planet's machine operations. However, the supercomputer has been infested by a sentient entity called Duo, a spatial consciousness which spontaneously arose within the supercomputer. Players can employ various weapons for their planes, as well as pods which serve as both missile launchers and direct shields. The planes featured in this game are the Tanikura F7W Saber and the Dakao M-2451 Scimitar.
